Teaching with Music

We've already heard from kids, that they want to learn and sing sea shanties. Composers will be asked to compose sea shanties that teach parts of the curriculum, one sea shanty will be selected as the official Shanty for the Classroom on the Bay for singing aboard the General Pershing. ​

Below are a couple of landlocked kids from Idaho singing a sea shanty. The kids deal with a farm animal on their property at the beginning of the video, but stay patient because they sing a very nice version of the Wellerman song. As kids do, they lose control and go off script after their performance.

Calling All Composers

To stimulate composers to compose music that fits the maritime theme is to create a contest and offer cash prizes for winners.  As in all things the greater the prize the greater the talent pool and the more prizes, the greater the number of submissions. While composers will retain rights, Monterey Boat Heritage will take the right to use the composition for its productions.
